PRESS RELEASE: Eritrean Refugees in Libya and Sudan in danger

Meeting with UNHCR - Italy

The UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) Regional Delegate, Dr. Walter Irvine, has received in Rome a delegation of the Italian Committee for Peace, Democracy and Justice in Eritrea.





During the meeting, to whom also Mrs Laura Boldrini, Dr. Christopher Heine, responsible for CIR (Italian Council for Refugees) attended, the several problems and the dramatic situation of Eritreans held prisoners in Libyan detention camps were discussed. These people are at risk of violation of Human Rights and in serious danger of repatriation.

The Italian Committee for Peace, Democracy and Justice in Eritrea expressed their thanks to UNHCR and CIR for their engagement which recently brought the Italian Interior Ministry to allow 40 Eritreans enter Italy. The delegation underlined also the need of a serious annual plan of resettlement from Libya to Europe, and expressed the hope that Italy could be its spokesman within the European Commission. The situation of thousands of Eritrean refugees in Sudan and Libya, asking for political asylum, was once again examined. Their status of political refugees has already been checked from UNHCR.

Eritrean refugees in Italy - the Italian Committee for Peace, Democracy and Justice in Eritrea reported -suffer from blackmails and persecutions they endure, even in Italian territory, from officials of the Eritrean dictatorial regime.
